There lived in the city of Nazaret a carpenter named José, who married a young virgin named María from the same city. Mary once had a beautiful dream in which an angel approached her and told her that she had been chosen to give birth to the divine Child, Jesus, the Son of God.
The birth of Jesus was marked by the appearance of a bright star above Bethlehem, which could be seen for miles around. In nearby mountain fields, shepherds were managing their flocks, when an angel appeared before them and told them that a Savior had been born in Bethlehem.
The shepherds were also asked to find the baby in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. Soon they came to the place where Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary. Also, following the bright star in the sky, came the magi from the east, better known as the magi.
Bowing to the newborn, they offered him gold, frankincense, and myrrh as a gift. These gifts had special symbolic significance. Gold symbolizes royalty, that he would be a king. Frankincense symbolized his divine nature and myrrh represented a life of suffering and sacrifice.
